Tax laws passed in 2003 reimburse monies paid for smoking cessation programs. This is a tax credit - not a tax deduction, so that means a credit on taxes! (page 13, IRS Publication 502 year 2005, available on the internet:

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf ) Included in your medical expenses the amount paid for a program to stop smoking. (drugs that do not require a prescription , such as nicotine gum or patches are not included).

Weight Loss Clients Can Benefit Too! A physician must write a prescription for hypnosis with a specific diagnosis (such as obesity, hypertension, or heart disease). With the doctors sanction you can include fees paid to the hypnotherapist and for membership in a weight reduction group, attendance at meetings and gym, health club or spa membership dues.

How To Report: To claim the credit, complete Form 8885, Health Coverage Tax Credit, and attach it to your Form 1040 or Form 1040NR. You cannot claim the credit on form 1040A or Form 1040EZ. You must attach invoices and proof of payment for any amounts you include on line 2 of Form 8885 for which you did not receive an advanced payment. Be sure to note on page 3 of IRS Publication that out of pocket medical deductions are only allowed when they exceed 7% of your adjusted gross income. If they do, you get 100% credit for the money you spent.

Insurance Coverage for Hypnotherapy Services

Insurance often covers hypnotherapy if it is used for medical type purposes if used with a Medical Hypnotherapist. Amy Hale does not take or bill insurance, however, she can give you a receipt to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
