Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is safe and effective in treating issues having to do with anxiety, weight loss, smoking cessation, self-esteem, anxiety and many other emotional and medical complaints.  Hypnosis is used by many healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, psychotherapists and dentists.

Hypnosis literally means "sleep." This is a very poor definition because hypnotists decades ago misunderstood what was taking place in their subjects' minds. People confuse what they think is sleep because most hypnotherapists use a closed eye trance for relaxation.

Hypnosis can be described as a "narrowing focus of attention" which is now the acceptable and real definition of the state of hypnosis. It can also be considered as "dissociation" or "association" in certain instances. For example, you can learn to "dissociate" driving a car with smoking so that you no longer smoke when driving.

Our conscious minds hold what is referred to as the critical factor. This portion of your mind is the initial receiver of information at any given time. During the hypnosis state (narrowing focus of attention), I can communicate with you while you are using significantly less critical thought (questioning the message) to evaluate the message than you would normally.

Truths About Hypnosis Myths About Hypnosis
You are aware of what I am saying to you and can respond. You are asleep.
You become in control of what you are thinking and receiving (and subsequently saying and doing). The hypnotherapist is in control. You are not in control.
You can be hypnotized in a completely wide awake state. You must have your eyes closed and relax.
You are very focused as you concentrate on the issue you present. You are relaxed. (Actually most people are, but it is not required. Not all hypnotists know this.)
There is no set standard of how hypnosis feels. Many people will not recognize this state as "new or different" because everyone goes in and out of hypnosis every day, several times per day. When formal inductions occur, you will feel like you cannot move (some people do actually report this), or you will feel disconnected from your body (others report this as well).
Because you have held habits and some beliefs about yourself and the world for a very long time, you will probably need more than one session. (Usually 2 to 6 sessions are required. 6-10 session are needed for weight loss.) You can change your long standing beliefs and habits in just one session.
Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy to psychotherapy and medical treatment. Hypnotherapy can take place of psychotherapy or medical treatment.

If you have ever been watching a movie and forgot about your surroundings you've experienced a hypnotic trance.  If you have ever driven from point A to point B and you don't remember much in between, you've experienced a hypnotic trance.

Hypnotherapy is not a passive process.  You might be given assignments, such as listening to a self-hypnosis CD, journaling, or completing workbook exercises in order to help facilitate the changes you desire.  Your success depends upon how much effort you put into the process with Ms. Hale and at home. As with anything else, this means you will need to commit to change and be consistent.

Hypnotherapy has been successfully used to help relieve emotional and physical challenges such as anxiety, pain and addictions.  Non-conscious beliefs are often uncovered so that new solutions can be formed and utilized in order to help you work toward achieving what you desire most.

Clinical hypnotherapy is often used along with other healthcare modalities such as psychotherapy, nutritional counseling, medical procedures and other holistic practices.  In cooperation with these and other areas of healthcare, hypnotherapy can often improve the quality of recovery from illness as well as shorten the duration of dis-ease.
